LIBRARY INFORMATION SERVICES MONTH CELEBRATION
This is an annual local and national school event held in November. In this month-long celebration, librarians, booksellers, publishers, and educators come together to hold and sc-book exhibits, read-a-thons, story hours, contests, book displays, and other related activities to stimulate interest in books and reading.
Every November, the BCIHS Library joins the Philippines' nationwide celebration of Library and Information Services (LIS) Month, established under Proclamation No. 837, s. 1991. This event highlights the vital role of all types of libraries in society, including public school libraries under the Department of Education (DepEd), which actively engage students in various activities. For LIS Month 2024, the BCIHS library staff organized a simple celebration, collaborating with the reading coordinator, Mrs. Criscel I. Distrito, and other Filipino Department coordinators despite scheduling challenges. They obtained approval from the school administrative officer and principal to proceed. The celebration's objectives were to participate in the national event, promote library services, and showcase students' creativity and thinking skills. The program featured a colorful Book Character Parade, led by enthusiastic students and teachers, and was supported by school leadership. Other activities included a Library Tour at the City Library, Read-A-Thon, Librocacy, and Araw ng Pagbasa Challenge. The celebration also held contests such as Book Cover Making, Word Search Challenges, and Guess the Book, all aimed at fostering literacy and appreciation for reading. The theme for 2024 was “LIBROCACY: Unity Towards Inclusive and Empowered Libraries.” The Book Cover Making Contest for LIS Month 2024 was open to Grade 9 and 10 students, with entries designed at home and submitted by November 18, 2024. The contest featured a book titled Pagbasa at Pagsusuri Tungo sa Iba’t Ibang Teksto Tungo sa Pagnanaliksik by Morales, Lingat, and Atanacio. Winners included Jewel A. Pacpaco (1st), Angela Nicolle L. Magtibay (2nd), and Alfa Udele D. Mercado (3rd). Additional challenges were the Word Search (for Grades 7 & 8) and Guess the Book (for all senior high students), with winners selected based on speed and accuracy. Despite low participation initially, the contests were opened to all grade levels. Winners received medals, tokens, and certificates. The activities aimed to identify talented and creative students, motivate library programs, and foster greater support for library initiatives from students, teachers, and staff. The library staff expressed gratitude for the support from the school community.
